Peter Mutharika Declared Winner of Malawi’s 2025 Presidential Election
Lilongwe, Malawi – Peter Mutharika has been declared winner of the 2025 presidential election, marking his return to State House.
Malawians voted on 16 September 2025 in a general election that included ward councillors, Members of Parliament, and the presidency. But all eyes were on the top race, where Mutharika of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) faced Lazarus Chakwera of the Malawi Congress Party (MCP), Dalitso Kabambe of the United Transformation Movement (UTM), and Joyce Banda of the People’s Party (PP).
After a tense week of counting, MEC Chairperson Annabel Mtalimanja announced at around 8 p.m. on 24 September that Mutharika had secured victory. The declaration confirms him as Malawi’s president for the next five years, ending Chakwera’s incumbency.
The announcement sparked celebrations in DPP strongholds, with supporters hailing the result as a new beginning. Meanwhile, rival parties reacted cautiously, urging calm as they review the outcome.
With the election settled, Malawi now turns to Mutharika’s leadership and the policies his administration will pursue between 2025 and 2030.
